Overweight players in EPL by BMI
There are fat guys and there are huge guys and there are just stunt or bulky guy but Any BMI over 25 means that the person in question should 'think about' losing weight, and there are 26 players who have made at least one appearance this season who fit into that category. Going through them all one-by-one would take forever, so we're going to cherry-pick. List courtesy of the Mirror.
These are the players who just pop over the threshold, those from about 16-26 on the list. There are, unsurprisingly, a disproportionate number of goalkeepers in this bit of the list - Michel Vorm , Tim Howard and Brad Guzan all featuring. After all, it's not like they've got as much running around to do as their outfield teammates.
There's a fair number of players who might often find themselves referred to as 'stocky' here, too. Xherdan Shaqiri is one of the more unsurprising names to feature, alongside the likes of Memphis Depay , Shinji Okazaki and West Ham star Dimitri Payet.
On the opposite end of the height spectrum, 6'3" Yaya Toure appears in this region too.
7. #11-15
Micah Richards hasn't played more than 10 league games in a season since 2012 and it might just be starting to affect his fitness, as he appears here. That, or he's just spending all of his off-time bulking up in the gym.
The same could be said for Manchester City's Wilfried Bony, but not Norwich defender Steven Whittaker , who started 40 Championship games last season. Too much summer celebration?
Both of the next two players are Chelsea centre-backs, Kurt Zouma and John Terry. Zouma is a strong, powerful player and his weight doesn't seem to be hindering him at all, but maybe Terry could move slightly faster than a tanker if he dropped a couple of pounds?
Their weight might be pulling chelsea down |
6. #6-10
Next up on the list are strikers Danny Graham and Romelu Lukaku; the latter in particular showing the folly of basing health judgments solely on BMI. Look at Lukaku and try to claim, with a straight face, that he's fat. That's just muscle on muscle on muscle.
On the other hand, John Ruddy is next up. Ahem. Moving swiftly onwards...
There's something about this list which attracts people who play or have played for Chelsea. After Terry, Zouma and Lukaku, former Blue Ryan Bertrand is added to the list alongside suddenly-hopeless Branislav Ivanovic . Is there something in the water down at Stamford Bridge?
5. Darron Gibson - Everton
Everton's Darron Gibson comes in at number five, a bit of a barrel of a man, but one who's packed with muscle. On the other hand, he's massively injury-prone. Could it be something to do with the old 'the bigger they are, the harder they fall' principle?
4. Wes Morgan - Leicester
Morgan's appearing in a lot of top 10s this season. For example, he recently foudn his way into a list of the fastest players in the top flight this season. He might be a bit bulky, but it definitely doesn't stop him shifting.
3. Fraizer Campbell - Crystal Palace
Did anybody else have an image of Campbell in their head as a little, whippy 20-year-old tearing up the Championship with Hull City? He's still got his pace, but he's lost the great metabolism of youth and now relies more on power than before.
2. Darren Randolph - West Ham
West Ham's reserve keeper is the heaviest player on the list at just a shade under 100kg, or about 15 and a half stone in old money. He's not anywhere near the Neville Southall level, but it's probably for the best that he's a goalkeeper and not a winger. Having said that, who'd fancy marking him if he came up to attack a last-minute corner?
1. Martin Olsson - Norwich
Norwich's Swedish defender tops the list after starting the season with an injury, the only man to push his BMI up into the '28' range, carrying 81 kilos (12st 10lbs) on his 5'7 frame. It's not stopped him playing well on his return to the side though, bombing up and down the left-hand side without a care in the world.
